Im learning and learning all this easy stuff before I venture onto my first build, and im SURE this is PRETTY important to know >< lol....

thanks

Most motherboards are compatable with SpeedFan. If your computer is some custom build, you might be able to find software made specfically for the motherboard.

With some manufacturers like Asus a temperature probe utility is included with the board's software/driver cd that ships along with it. Or you can go direct to the company's download site for the free download there. SpeedFan is one of a few good freewares for monitoring both processor and board temps as well as voltages and cpu and case fan speeds.

Your CPU temperature will be displayed in the BIOS. To view it in Windows, a program like Everest or SpeedFan is required.

I actually quite like the Asus probe application. Although it's fairly buggy it does the job. But normally I either look at Asus probe (due to me having an Asus motherboard) or the bios.

Dont you find that when you minimise the program (not to the start bar nor try) but actually when you click on the slide in button so that the right panel slides into the left creating a little hexigon instead of having it stretched that it lags a little?

Are you using ASUS PC Probe 2, or ASUS PC Probe 1? I couldnt stand ASUS PC Probe 2, so I went back to the original one.

Your temps are seen in the bios IF the board comes with a hardware monitor. There are still some newer boards that don't include this. The softwares like SpeedFan and Everest simply read off of the board's sensors. But they are not always 100% accurate. Some people have sensors installed to a build for monitoring temps while in Windows.

The version I'm using is: ASUS PC Probe II V1.01.10 Install Program for Windows 32bit 2000/XP/2003 & 64bit Windows XP/2003. So in short, yeah I'm using Probe 2. Never used 1 before, big difference?

(I see that asus have updated their site recently).

I have both versions of the Asus probe installed here. The newer version has small detachable displays for cpu and board temps while the first has a screen for going from one thing to another. When minimized Probe II sees the cpu and board temp displays still sitting on the desktop while the main portion drops right to the task bar. Probe I goes off screen entirely.
