How do I find my Serial Key for Win XP ?

I want to re-format my hard drive.
I have the disk and I have done it before.
I can't find the disk case where I had the KEY on.

How can I find my Serial number KEY for my windows XP.

Maybe I'm wrong, but don't those programs only work on installed and activated copies of windows(IE before the format...)

Well yeah it's not like you can find the key to a OS not installed yet.
