How do I find out?

Okay, I'm not a technical know it all in the slightest. It all began when I decided that I'd upgrade my graphics card (which is for another thread). A friend advised me, in order to play the latest games, I would be wise to upgrade from 512MB RAM to 1GB. And in order to do that, I need to find out what type of memory my computer takes. And in order to do that, I need to find out what my motherboard's manufacturer is, and what model number it is.

I've been told the only way for me to find out is to open her up and take a peek. What I want to know is :

- Is this the only way for me to find out?
- What will I be looking for if I should open my computer?
- Any do's and don'ts?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, from those helpful links you guys provided, I've been able to figure out that my computer takes PC2700 type memory.

Right?

So this type of memory should be perfect?

Or is there more tedious technicalities?

that is very very overpriced ram. try to find some at zipzoomfly.com they ship internationaly i beleive. and hell of a lot cheaper, but that is the right type as long as you got an open memory slot which i think you do.

Er, okay. I was checking out some RAM, and I noticed something.

These are all 2700.

-Will they all work with my computer?
-What's the difference between them?

Oh right, so for my desktop, I should just ignore SODIMM?

As you can see above, should I just get 2700 SDRAM 512MB?

Errrm, to be honest you don't really want to mix and match different makes / models or RAM together... You can do it, but it can result in compatability issues and problems later on. I'd recommend that you buy either 1 stick of 1GB RAM, or buy two 512MB sticks.

Also, tell us your motherboard (you can find that out on the first tab of CPU-Z). It may be able to handle PC3200 which operates at a faster speed than PC2700.

I don't know what make my RAM is though.

There's my motherboard info. How would I find out what make my RAM is?

It's Samsung lol... Look on your previous post with the details about your RAM - in the Manufacturer section ;)

As for your motherboard and what it can support, I have no idea since it is made by "TriGem" and it doesn't give me a specific model. My guess would be that it can support PC3200, but don't rely on that.

Well, for the biggest chance of a compatible 512MB stick of RAM to go with the one currently in there, yes.

I checked my RAM again through a scanning thing at crucial.com and it said that my RAM is PC2100. Am I right, or is the scanner correct?
