howdy everyone, the windows XP pro trial version has ended and now i need to install XP home onto my laptop but how in the world do i format it? i know that xp home is bootable but how can i format it? I booted with the xp home cd until i got to the part where it says that i am installing windows ontop of another operating system whould you like to intall? or would you like to delete the selected partition? and so on. I don't know what to do. I checked the product manual and it doesnt have anything on reformating! :-( BTW my laptop is a toshiba Pro M10 model.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Nico

So you can't format with your XP disk? Well...there's the possibility of USB floppy drives, or you could make a boot CD(I'm pretty sure DeepBurner will copy a disk and make a boot CD for you) Or you might be able to find some free partitioning program that'd make a bootable CD for you

Well right after the "delete the selected partition" page, you'll find the format page. If for some strange reason, it won't let you format, go ahead and delete the partition and make a new one.

okey i went past the deleting the partition and it says:

the partition you tried to delete is a system partition

system partitions may contain diagnostic or hardware configuration, programs to start operating systems (such as windows xp) or other monufacturur suplied programs

delete a system partition only if you are sure that it contains no such programs or you are willing to loose them. Deleting a system partition may prevent your computer from starting from the hardisk until you complete your instalation of windows XP

and then it gives me a choice to continue or exit. What should i do?

Sorry i am a newbie with laptops althought ive done some reformating of desktops ive never done it for a laptop so excuse my questions :-)

Well if you want to keep your partition, you just select that you want to keep it the way it is. After that, you'll see the formating selections. Either way, you're going to loose the programs because you want to format anyways, doesn't matter if you redo your partitions.

Howdy, yes i did it and worked like a charm! Thanks a million! Like i said i never reformated a laptop with no floppy before so i was hesitent to do it esp when i got that msgs but it makes sense that i was reformating anyways so i shouldnt worry about loosing all those programs. It worked great only problem i have now is trying to make the wireless work but thats a whole different story hehehehe. Thanks for the help!
