I would be careful what you shut down, a few obvious ones are the two browsers and the WMP. The other is the Norton resource hog CCAPP which will screw up norton if you shut it down. I think this your email monitor. I certainly would NOT shut down svchost. Those are services that run at start-up and I'm pretty sure they are needed.
With all that said, All of these processes do not run at the same time, so you aren't even coming close to using 260.

I would not...

svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

if you are not playing online unplug the internet and shut down your antivirus and firewall bring up task manager click on processes then click user name so you can see everything that is running in the name of the pc ,ie the name you gave your pc not system or local service or network service and end process on everything exept explorer .
think about upgrading your memory xp needs around 256mb without anything else running, dont forget to run your antivirus and firewall before plugging the internet back in.

Antivirus is not THAT important. I currently run no antivirus... run online scans and malware scans maybe once a month. If you disable the anitvirus it will make things a lot faster.

my antiviruses are 100% disabled, all i have running is windows xp firewall.
i'm almost never infected (once every 9 months). because i'm careful with what i open and whenever i visit "questionable" sites, i'll make sure i run a scan afterwards.
my opinion: antiviruses are only good to activate for scans, not constant guarding of your pretty-much-safe computer, especially when it's at the expense of your precious RAM

Start> run> msconfig> services> now check the little box that says hide all microsoft services then you can see whats running that you can shut down.
