I bought a new (used computer) on line that really works pretty good but cant load any programs (Picassa, printer drives etc.) because it says I need Administrator Privilages. Obviously I dont have a password, so how do I load my programs ? It is a Dell GX620 with XP
Thanks so much Deano

Sounds like its limited account. You can check this through user accounts. Let me know if its set to limited account.

You'll need to use a tool to remove/change the password, try hirens boot disk, very easy to use the active password changer.
Other than that, a fresh install of windows might be the best idea, since the computer is yours now.
Just make sure you install the same version the case sticker is licensed for.

Press the f8 button at startup to boot to safe mode, log on to the administrator account, go into control panel, user accounts and change the limited account to an administrator account.

However, the best thing to do when taking over a machine is to do a fresh install of windows. But this may be hard if you don't have the reinstall cd.

Well I did what you said and both accounts were already Admin,. Accounts, I changed the passwords, but it still doesnt work and when I get back to normal mode and go to the user accoun it still has it as limited account, any ideas ? beside throwing the machine away

Thanks Deano

You said before that your account was a limited account and now you say its set for admin account? It doesn't make any sense. You can always boot back into safe mode and create a new account and set it as admin.

thats why ya want more than one account. A backup account like admin1, admin2. In case it gets corrupted so ya have access to another. Its a good day though.

OK so your saying I should set up a second one and dump all my stuff and backup into the second one ? That sounds like a gooid idea but wouldnt that use up a lot of space if I had two of everything ? Or do I just set up the account but leave it empty
Thanks

As long as you are running XP you are basically good to go because you have the hidden admin account available when you boot to safe mode.

OK Thanks, will do. Now if I can just get the web pages from ebay to work I think I am in like Flynn. ( I posted this problem and I think you were looking into it )
