How do I get myownsitename.com?

I have a webpage on the free space that my ISP gives me. I would like to get a domain where I can choose the name for my site's url. For example. whateveriwant.com

How do I go about doing that in the most inexpensive (free if possible) way? And how can I do it so that when someone types www.whateveriwant.com they automatically get redirected to where my site is located right now?

Thanks.

I don't think there is any free domain name...

I spend 15$ a year for mine.
Basically you can register a domain name on almost any hosting website. Look on google for domain name and choose the best deal you can get. Remember, just get a domain name, sometimes it comes with free space, which would be useless in your case.

If you have any question, please ask, I know this stuff :P (I have benjidela.com)

15 dollars a year is fine. Is there any company you would recommend? I don't know which ones are reliable or unreliable.

So, if I only register a domain name, do they automatically take the viewer to where I have my site already uploaded? I suppose that if I only get the domain name, then there is no limits on bandwidth traffic, right? That limit would be given by my ISP that provides me with free space, right?

I'll go check google right now.

Yeah it's pretty good :D

10$ for a year is what i would recommend. Now you said you had the hosting right? Do you have a DNS address? Because if you don't you can forget about the whole thing...

Hmm, dumb question, but how do I know if I have one?

in the command prompt ipconfig/all
tells me DNS servers.......... 192.168.2.1
Lease expires..... (and the date is in in two days)

That address is how I access my router settings. Does this have anything to do with what I need?
In the TCP/IP properties for my connection, I have it set to obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically.

I don't know if it helps, but my current website is located through my ISP like this: http://home.ispname.net/HereIsMyUsername/index.html
Will all this work in a case like mine? Or should I look to host my site somewhere else?

Thats the info from within your LAN. Are you able to access your web site by entering in your external IP from a computer not on your LAN?

Well, I don't know, but I don't think so. By "external" ip address, do you mean my computer's ip address online right now? If you mean the ip address of my webpage, well.... that's exactly what I'm trying to find out.

If I go here: http://www.webyield.net/domainquery.html
and check my PC's ip address, it tells me what it is (it's a dynamic one) and then I can find who hosts this address (i.e. my isp info).

If I go here: http://www.selfseo.com/find_ip_address_of_a_website.php
and type in my webpage address, it says it can't find anything. I have to just type the http://home.myispname.net part and then it gives me some info on my isp (our phone company). However, all the individual username pages for that isp (so for example .....net/username/index.html) don't show up anything.

You probably don't have a DNS address which means your website can only be accessed from your computer...

Did the ISP gave you some IP address for your website?

If not, then I would suggest to get a Hosting+Domain name pack, there are pretty good deal out there.

EDIT:
how do you see your website when you go on it through a browser, what's the address you enter?

What do you mean my website can only be accessed from my computer if I don't have a dns address?

To view a website with that ISP, you have to type in something like (for example): http://home.arcor.de/username and that is what you see in the address bar. The ISP is Arcor (in Germany).
I don't know of any IP address for my website.

PS - does godaddy.com offer hosting+domain name?

EDIT:
I just saw that godaddy offers both. What is a good price for hosting - domain name for just a basic private homepage. I only use it to show pictures to friends and family and keep them updated on things, so I don't really want to spend too much money (considering I can have it hosted for free right now). I just wish I could give people a url name that is easier to remember.

UPDATE:
Here is a question. I was looking at the domain registration in godaddy.com. Couldn't I just register a domain with them and then in the setup, point that domain to the url of my homepage? Couldn't I then also mask it? I don't see where they ask for an ip address. If you look here (see page 4 of that user guide), you'll see that they just ask you to enter the url name where you want to point your domain to.

Ok nevermind I can see your website.

Now did you get a DNS address from your host? If not send him an email to get one. If you don't have any, it's useless to get the domain, as the DNS address works as the connector between the Hosting Address and the Domain Name.

Yes Godaddy offers both.

I use Hostingplex, 8$ a month for a lot of space (200GB space and 1000GB bandwith). Domain Name is in the package. 96$ a year I think.

I updated my previous post, but I don't know if you saw it (you might have been posting at the same time). This is what I wrote:

But maybe all that assumes that the url you enter has a unique ip address.

Hmm, and just to clarify, do I need the DNS address or the IP address of the website. I'm a bit confused on the terminology.

BTW, thanks for all your help and quick responses.

Well Godaddy seems to let you just enter a URL and redirect people to it when they enter the domain name... I guess it would work...

I have no idea though, I've alway used DNS, which is how you usually connect a Hosting and a domain name.

PS: always happy to help :D

yeah, I sent godaddy an email asking them specifically about my url. We'll see what they respond. It says they'll respond within 24 hours.

I'll post what they tell me. :)

Interesting. I found this where you get a domain name for free. I wonder what the catch is. It says there is no advertising. However, I don't care for the .ms after each domain.

Anyway, just as an FYI. You can check it out.

I wouldn't recommend free domains, there is always something to it...

Yeah, I agree. I'd rather pay a little bit and have a stable deal.

Okay, so I went with godaddy and got my own domain. I can forward the domain by simply entering the url. I didn't need to do anything with DNS or IP addresses or name servers or anything. It was really easy and I'm glad it worked.

Thanks again for your help. I was new to the topic and your guidance and pointers really helped out. :)

No problem PC Hobbyist!
