How do I get rid of Limewire?

Ive had Limewire on my computer for a couple of years. I've only downloaded a few songs with it. No...really! Anyway I was using it tonight when it started acting very strange. My computer suddenly acted as if it restarted by itself. I couldn't x out of limewire. I've tried removing the program using the "remove program" my control panel. but now I keep getting a pop up that says that I have a bad limewire file. It wants me to reinstall it. I do not want it on my computer. How do I stop the popup? I tried to "restore" to an earlier time but the only restore point I have is one at about the same time as when the problems started happening. Does any of this make any sense.

Help

it most likely has nothing to do with limewire. It's probably a file that you downloaded from limewire that had spyware or adware along with it. If limewire won't uninstall just go to my computer and find the files for limewire on your hdd and delete them manually. I don't think that will solve your problem though since its probably a file you downloaded like I stated before. Just run a spyware, virus, adware, etc. cleaner to clean up your computer.

Reinstall to correct the problem and then totally remove it. If you are not familiar with manually editing the system registry that would be the best move for you there. The add/remove if no uninstaller is seen should work better for removing the new copy installed.

For those with registry experience the RegCleaner is a useful tool since the main window displays the main reg keys for all non MS programs installed. You might still have to boot up in safe mode to make sure everything remains unloaded while not usually needed in order to remove the main keys and manually delete the installed folders after a system restart to insure nothing is still running. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

The first item on the list is opening the msconfig utility and disabling items for Limewire found there to prevent them from loading up with Windows. Removng the main regs with RegCleaner along with that will see everything unloaded on a reboot in order to manually delete the program's folders off of the drive.

here is what I'm getting. It pops up about every 30 seconds.

Limewire is a cesspool of malware. You're smart to not want it on your system.
LimeWire is not a cesspool of malware, Kazaa on the other hand has tons.

If you can't remove it, then manually delete the program files and run a cleanup utility and registry cleaner.

You are smart to remove Limewire from your PC. I still have it on my PC, but I prevented it from activating on start up and haven't used it in months. Last time I used it I tried downloading somethings and the files contained files that were trying to infect my PC.

I just stay away from such stuff now since its not worth people coming after me for copyright infringement or one of those malicious programs getting past my anti-virus software and destroying my PC.

The problem with Limewire and other similar programs is not that they are loaded with adwares/spywares/whatever but that they leave your system wide open for exploitation allowing things to get past any security measures already inplace. Even with WMP the automatic update media information online option is disabled here.

This is what "Hijackthis" found. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get rid of this virus?

its probably not a virus or any type of malicious file just reinstall limewire and than run the uninstaller again.

For one it's not a virus but an installed application. There's one freeware that will display the main registry key that contains all sub keys called RegCleaner it's own main window when giong to use it. You simply place a check mark next to the main item and click the remove button next to the exit button at the bottom. http://www.dewassoc.com/support/useful/regcleaner.htm

But you also lose the option for Limewire's own uninstaller or the add/remve programs and would have to manually track all files and folders left on the drive including those buried in the DocumentsandSettings>user name sub folders there.

this happened to my like 5 times at least, and it is a file that went somewhere else and is not limewire, you need to download a spyware thing to get rid of it and i havnt even used a spyware thing yet, it does delete but if i reinstall it it still re opens automaticly sometimes never close no matter what and other things, that should work

OK...I think I may have this under control now....I hope. I had run "spybot" and "adware" several times each and although they each found problems and "fixed" them my main problem still continued. I ran my "avast Anti virus" program twice also but the broblem still continued. So before I went to bed last night I shut off "avast" and downloaded "AVG anti virus" program. When I got up this morning I did a reboot and so far....no more problems. I ran AVG again just to be sure and it found and repaired another 4 problems it said.
Right now things seem to be back to normal. I sure hope it stays that way and I will be staying away from Limewire for now on.

This does make me wonder now....if I should be running any other kind of programs to help me keep my system "clean". What do you suggest?

Whatever it is Limewire simply opened the doors for it to get onto your system there. AVG simply picked up on something downloaded at some point after you had been running it for a period of time. One freeware found recently that works better then Spybot S&D is called Spyware Terminator found at http://www.spywareterminator.com/

What that one does is put a mild form of firewall type active protection inplace. Even if you try yourself to alter any softwares installed you will be prompted to allow or deny any changes. It also finds more data miners then Ad-Aware 2007 while that one will remove reg entries for browser hijackers. Those two seem to work quite well along with AVG over other combinations seen so far.

I just wanted to updated what happened to me. My last post on here I said that all seemed to be fine. I had downloaded AVG and ran it several times and the problem seemed to be fixed. I decided that I didnt want two different antivirus programs on my computer so I went to my add/delete file and deleted the "avast" antivirus program. When done I was told to restart my computer so I clicked yes. Windows shut down BUT would not start back up! No matter what I did I could not get windows XP to start. No safe mode..nothing! After a couple days of thinking about this I unpluged it all and took it to a shop. They found that my windows XP was corrupted and I was going to have to reformat. So...I went out and bought a new (sata) hard drive and installed it and reformatted. Now I want to plug in my old hard drive and try to pull old files off of it. I havent done that yet. I'm assumming that I will be able to do that and that my old files will be ok to use. I do have a few programs on the old drive that I would like to pull off as well.

You will now have to see those programs installed fresh on the new drive. Once you put the old drive in you will first see the new hardware found message. If you can'y access it right away go into the device manager>disk drives and right click on it to choose the let Windows search option there.

If that still sees problems go back in and choose the uninstall option and restart the system to see Windows redetect the drive and then add it in as a new logical drive. As long as the sata drivers were installed for that make and model board if the old itself was a sata you shouldn't have any problems copying files from it.
