How do i install unbutu?

what video card do you have? Nvidia or Ati?

You need to install specific packages to do it, then enable certain settings.

On a side note, most people switch to Linux for stability, the ability to shape the programming to their needs, or security. If using Compiz was your only reason to use Ubuntu, I'm not sure you're ready for it. Seems a bit silly to go through all that trouble jus tto see a 3D cube.

and i get the 3d cube how? also when i start ubuntu up it takes awhile

Blue, you need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and *read* what is being told to you. Then, you need to decide if you just want Ubuntu for the over-rated cube, or if you want it for a stable operating system. If you want it for just the cube to spin around, maybe you should stick with Windows.

Means 'tell us what video card you have'. That is the first step to setting the Desktop Effects.

We're trying to help you. We *want* to help you. But first, you need to take the steps we tell you to take before jumping off on others.

I have no idear what graphics card i have but its a dell latitude d600, Whats step 2? " takes a deep breath "

Go to SYSTEM>ADMINISTRATION>RESTRICTED DRIVERS, click on it. It will read your GPU and install the correct driver (if applicable). If it does not install the driver, you will have a hard time making Desktop Effects work.

If the driver is installed, reboot. Then, open a Terminal window and type 'sudo apt-get update' (without quotes) and press Enter. Enter your password and hit Enter again.

Then, type 'sudo apt-get upgrade' (again, without quotes), press Enter. If upgrades are detected, they will be listed. Whatever they are, hit Y to install them.

After any updates are installed, type 'sudo aptitude install compiz', press Enter. if that does not work, Open Synaptic Package Manager, and search for 'compiz', click to install it, then select Apply.

Reboot again. Now, press ALT+F2 to open a command prompt and type 'ccsm' (again...no quotes), press enter. That will open the settings manager and allow you to customize your GUI.

If those steps do not work, you are not able to run it on your current GPU.

( sorry for spell errors

Then you cannot use Compiz. Sorry.

You really need a dedicated GPU (not shared memory or on-board) to use 3-D effects.

nooo in windows theres a program called yodm3D and i could use that fine and theres more effects then just cube!

Yes, in Windows...

Linux is not Windows (thank the gods).

Maybe you need to stay with Windows and that specific program.

Use the edit function. Do not make posts directly after each other. I don't think I can help you any further.
