I have an old AMD Athlon XP 2000 with, i assume, a stock heat sink and fan, and i have a 2600 i want to replace it with. No matter what I try, I cant get this heat sink off. Any ideas? Theres gotta be some little trick to it.

Heres some pics of the heatsink:

That appears to be one of those horrifically designed ones that you must cram a screw drive into those three peices of metal, then push down while bending the metal away from the keys. It's not easy, and one slip can screw up your mobo. I've even seen those metal tabs break causing screwdrives to slam into the mobo...

Well Mines a cheapo bad design too, cepts its the opposite. Mine barely sits on the CPU, and leans at around a 5 degree angle. If you want to take it off oyu can use barely and force with your hands.

Push down with your finger/hand/screwdriver/slot head on the very top of the 3 clips, slide a second slot head between the clips and the heatsink, and twist to the right. this should get one side loose, so the otherside willbe way easier. BUT you might break the cpu fan clips or the heatsink clips if you do not push down hard enough.

Oh dear, im nervous. Well thanks for the help. I love the speedy responses i get here.

You can see where i acedentally scratched the heatsink. I was trying to push down and pull out with a penny and it scratched

Any other ideas? I think i understand though.

Thanks

push down until the HSF clip is below the plastic cpu clip, then use the penny and ease out. the scratch will not do anything. keep on trying.

A clanmate told me that there is a chance that the heatsink and fan that are on my 2000+ may not support the upgrade to a 2600+. What are the chances of this? Is there anyway I can know before going through all the work of installing the new cpu. Im not entirely sure but I would assume the heatsink and fan are stock. The fan does say "coolmasters" on it. I dont really know, i got most of the parts for this comp in a garagesale :D

Thanks
Jake

Give us the full CPU name and Mobo name =) LOL garage sale? wish I had seen one.. I would be building computres 24/7!

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ is what i have installed now. (Thoroughbred)
Im upgrading to a AMD Athlon 2600+ (Not sure if its XP or not what ever that means)

MOBO is a ASUS A7V266-E

Not sure what the heatsink and fan is?

EDIT:Yeah the garage sale was awesome, got everything there except for RAM which i got for free and crappy HD wich i already had.

Well there were 3 XP 2600s, two with a 333 FSB and one with a 266 FSB. Your board has a 200 and 266 FSB so the one would work, the other two might work it would just downclock them.
Athlon XP 2600+ with 256KB L2 Cache and 266MHz FSB
CPU Speed: 2133MHz (2.133GHz)
CPU Frequency Multiplier: 16.0x
CPU External Frequency (MHz): 133

Athlon XP 2600+ with 256KB L2 Cache and 333MHz FSB
CPU Speed: 2083MHz (2.083GHz)
CPU Frequency Multiplier: 12.5x
CPU External Frequency (MHz): 166

Athlon XP 2600+ with 512KB L2 Cache and 333MHz FSB
CPU Speed: 1917MHz (1.917GHz)
CPU Frequency Multiplier: 11.5x
CPU External Frequency (MHz): 166
