how do I split an external harddisk?

Hi there,
I'm kind of new to all of this, so if I sound stupid to you... I am stupid :)

Recently I bought GTA San Andreas. When I got home there was a bit of a panic, because my computer does not include a dvd player (it used to have but somehow the software got missing, and the store people tell me it's beyond fixing... I installed the game using an external dvd reader from a friend. Now, the dvd player is no longer available to me, and the game is highly addictive. Because of a lack of harddisk space, I bought an external harddisk to install the game. ( that's why I don't have the money to buy an external dvd player ) I thought that if I split the ( external ) harddisk and copy all the files from the dvd on that second half, telling my computer that that second half is in fact a dvd drive, I can play the game again. ( I recon I could borrow that external dvd drive again for a couple of hours ) Unfortunately I don't know how to split an external harddisk and how to tell my computer that one half is in fact a dvd drive. If you do, please let me know.
I run windows XP Professional.

Thanks in advance,

Me

well, you would need a program like PowerQuest's Partition Magic 7.0 or 8.0. This would "split" your hard disk into whatever you wanted, but the tricky bit is telling the PC that the new partiton on the ext drive is a dvd rom drive. I dont think his can be done. Inside the games .ini files it will tell the game whre to look for the DVD, i suppose if you opened this file up and changed it a bit then you could tell it to look at the hard drive and not the DVD drive that you dont have.

There are several cracks on the web to tell games to not look at CD's but to refer to a hard drive but these are not to be discussed on this forum.

1. Control Panel
2. Administrative Tools
3. Computer Management
4. Disk Management
You can make partitions and stuff here ... unlike Partition magic or what not you'll lose your data and stuff (but it comes free)

But he wants to tell the computer that half the game is on the dvd drive and the other half is on the hard disk.. I think...

Thanks for the quick replies. I know that I' touching a "taboo" like subject here, but it really isn't funny not being able to play a game that you bought...
The problem is that I can't read the dvd, so I need something like a virtual dvd drive ( if it exists ) that is in fact part of my external hard disk, where I can store the data that should be on the dvd, so that I can play the game ( more than is healthy to me :) )

an internal dvd drive is like $30 CDN on the expensive end, it's not really a big financial hit so why not just buy one?

i might have missed something here, but why cant you buy an internal dvd-rom drive? They cost less then $20 online.

He must mean loading, installing, and merging the entire DVD's data onto the external hard drive so that he won't have to borrow the DVD drive and use the DVD again. Is someone going to give him a loader/merger program? Hmmmm.....http://www.download.com/Easy-DVD-Clone/3000-7970_4-10430717.html

(Similar scenario: You guys remember the Playstation 2's external hard drive capability and its HD loader program to copy games to the drive for faster loading (and no DVD) right?)

(I know BFG bundles a trial version of a CD/DVD to hard drive copier program with some of its newest cards.)

There are a lot of virtual DVD software, just do a search on google.
You will still need a DVD drive to create a virtual image of the game first.
You have to purchase the virtual drive software though unless you can find one free.
Without free software - this will narrow down between buying the virtual drive software or a DVD Drive - It doesn't make any sense.

Just buy the DVD drive and make things simple.

i can think of two options. 1. http://www.gamecopyworld.com/ and get a no cd crack. i believe it is legal if and only if you have a legal copy of the game. someone correct me otherwise.

2. create an image out of the cd and then use a program such as daemon tools as a virtual drive.

So this easy dvd clone stuff, should solve the problem? Can it tell my computer to look on my harddisk for the dvd, instead of looking for it in a dvd drive?
