How do I transfer data via crossconect cable?

I have two computers with windows xp. I have a crossover cable. I need to connect them together so I can transfer data from the old computer to the new one. How do I do this? I connected the crossover cable to the two and nothing happens. The green and orange Ethernet lights come on on each computer but that’s all.

Start>>Control Panel>>Network Setup Wizard. Once you are done with that a restart both computers, look under My Network Places.

Then what? There is nothing under my network places on either computer. I clicked view avaiable connections and the LAN Eathernet connection comes up but its listed with limited or no conectivitity.

Both systems will need to have the file and printer sharing enabled for access to a common folder. Don't forget about that one. One free program for this type of data transfer reads as follows:
SoftCopy 1.6

SoftCopy is a window-based application that transfers or copies the existing files and folders from the Source PC to the Destination PC and vice versa through either Parallel Cable / LAN Crossover Cable / Network LAN

If you still continue to have problems review the MS article seen at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/getstarted/bott_fstw.mspx

Start>Settings>Network Connections

on the left will be a link to "Set Up A Home Or Small Office Network", click on that and follow the wizard

I figured it out. You have to enable drive shareing on the slave computer and enter the slave computer's IP address in a window on the host computer.
