How do I uninstall Kubuntu??

i installed kubuntu 8.04 on an old desktop that i'm trying to get to work. but i'm unable to read and write to my encrypted ntfs drive.
i'm trying to get rid of kubuntu and once again try to install XP. or else try to get some other version of windows working.
my problem is, even after the windows cd formatted the hdd, the computer still boots to kubuntu.
and the only time i've managed to get rid of kubuntu so it wouldn't boot to it, the computer still tried to boot to it and wouldn't let me try to install windows.
please help!

by teh way, i am brand new to kubuntu and have never worked with anything but windows until now, so please be gentle with me. haha

There's no need to uninstall it... you should be able to reformat and install Windows. If that won't work for some reason try formatting your hard drive using gParted on the Kubuntu live cd. :)

Why give up so easily on it if youve never used it? Also, I would try Ubuntu before Kubuntu.

Regardless, NTFS file format is patchy at best for support within linux, you should really consider formatting the drive to XFS for full support.

You can try to get your drive working with NTFS simply by editing your fstab file and mounting it to a new directory.

when i tried to just install windows without worrying about uninstalling linux, the windows cd will format the drive and copy the files like normal. but the first time it reboots, it goes straight to kubuntu.

and, i have no idea how to edit that file. and i can't re-format the drive because all my data is on there and i have no way to transfer it. it's the only decent size drive i have left. :(

is your OS drive separate from the storage drive you mentioned? If so you could use Gparted to reformat the OS drive and that would def kill anything on it and get it ready to reinstall windows, if its the same drive, you can still use Gparted but just delete the OS partition and then reformat the unallocated space.

yeah, they are different drives.
thanks for the help. i'll give it a shot

hopefully this will work and i can get xp. otherwise, i'll be stuck with 98

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but, it sounds to me like you installed Ubuntu/Kubuntu, which installed Grub (bootloader), and you then removed/formatted the drive so Ubuntu/Kubuntu was gone, and now you've re-installed Windows, but it keeps booting into Ubuntu/Kubuntu?

If so, it sounds to me like Grub is still installed and trying to boot to Ubuntu/Kubuntu.

If this is the case, try this;

1.) Grab your Windows XP Install CD
2.) Boot to CD/DVD (into the Windows XP CD)
3.) Go to Recovery Console (Press 'R')
4.) Enter your admininstriator password
5.) Go to command prompt
6.) Type: Fixmbr (NOTE: This will restore the master boot record - MBR - on the primary drive)

Try to boot it up again.. if that fails, do everything in the exact order above, but instead of #6, type: Fixboot, reboot and try to boot up XP again.

Hope this helps :)

Let's just hope you didn't accidentally install XP on the storage drive

EDIT: Michael may be right... it's a possibility that GRUB is still there, if it actually boots into Kubuntu that's not the case though.

i never thought that fixboot and fixmbr would work since it was a linux install.
thanks for the idea.

and i made sure i wouldn't erase my data drive, i always disconnect it before reinstalling. i learned that one the hard way.

Nah, it should work fine, there's only one MBR... not a separate one for Linux and a separate one for Windows.
