How do I use a proxy server?

I'd like to browse the net anonymously from now on since I got unfairly banned from a forum.

Can anyone tell me exactly how to use a proxy server. I can find lists of proxy servers but have no idea how to use them.

In order to tell IE to use a proxy you need to do the following....

Open IE, click on TOOLS, go to INTERNET OPTIONS, go to the the CONNECTIONS tab and click on the LAN SETTINGS button. Check the box that says "use a proxy server for your LAN". Then enter in the address of the proxy you want and the port it uses, try port 80 or 21 if you don't know.

Click OK and APPLY on all the boxes, restart windows, test the connection, off you go.
 
OK well I've downloaded a free program called proxyway. Is it necessary to use a program in order to use a proxy server or is it not recommended?

Also I'd like to ask if using a proxy server slows down your surfing to a noticable degree?
 
If the proxy is well designed and efficient then it shouldnt slow down your connection at all, and you dont have to use a program to use proxy, it might be a bit easier though??? Its up to you.
