How Do I....

Hey Guys,

I have a bit of an issue. Not with myself, but with my computer.

I would like to know how to burn videos to a DVD, and then be able to play them on a DVD player.

I have some various formats (.avi .mpg .mpeg etc. etc.). Can I burn those to the DVD and pop them in my DVD player?

Or do I have to convert them to .dvd or something?

I downloaded "Burn4Free CD & DVD" program, but I haven't tryed it yet.

Anyways, thanks a bunch guys.

Ryan

You can use a program like WinAVI Converter to convert your .AVI & .MPG etc files into .VOB video files.

Then use NERO or similar DVD burning software to burn a Video DVD. You will be prompted for which Video file you want to burn, at this point you sellect the recently created .VOB files.

Ok, thankyou.

I downloaded the program you suggested. I converted the to the VOB format. About 5 different vob files came up for my video.

I tryed burning the DVD, but my DVD burning program says "please insert a disc!" - yet I have a blank DVD in my disc drive. I am worried that this computer may not burn dvd's. It says "DVD ROM 16x DVD" on the drive... Anyone?

The "DVD ROM 16x DVD" would be refering to the drive as a DVD Reader capable of 16x reading speed, and not a DVD Burner
What icons are on the front cover of your DVD Drive? Do you know the model number?

I guess that makes sense. I can't see any model numbers.

This is so dissapointing! I bought the DVD's and everything and was all set! Grrrr. Ok, well, am I able to install something to burn dvd's? How much would something like that cost me?

Thanks scrat

Yes you can install a DVD burner drive inplace of your current DVD drive.
However, before you go off an buy a new drive can you tell me/describe what logos/icons are on the front of your DVD drive...just to make sure its not a burner.
Can you tell me what country are you in so we can give you links to an appropriate shop.

Ok sounds good.

What logos are on my drive?

Well,

It has a a logo on the left and right hand side that say these
DVD disc
ROM re-writable
16xDVD 52x32x52x

And on the middle of the drive it says LG.

This is my grandmas computer so I am not very familiar with it. It is a weird brand computer. I think it is NCC NU or something.

I am in the United States. Seattle, Washington to be exact.

What type of DVD burner would I want to buy? I don't really want to spend over $100. Also, is this going to be hard to install into my computer? I have took computer apart and experimented, but I don't want to screw anything up. Thanks a lot scrat!

the nero package has a built in feature that lets you drag and drop video file formats in to its nifty program, simply add a little menu to the dvd, and then burn. this is what i use.

I have nero. We already concluded that I need a DVD burner, but thank you for your input.

The "16xDVD" refers to the speed it can read DVDs, and the "52x32x52" would be referring to burning speeds for CDs...so, i'd say its a DVD reader & CD Burner.

For US$100 you could get a burner with all the bells n whistles! A budget of $60 or less would be fine for these...depending on where you shop of course.

Hard...well if as you say you've taken a PC apart before, and are familiar with how to use a screwdriver, then no, not really.

1. Turn off the PC
2. You would unscrew & remove both side covers of the PC.
3. Unplug the cables from the rear of the current CD/DVD drive (noting which way they are plugged in.... i.e. Which side is the red stripe on the big ribbon cable facing).
4. Unscrew the 4 screws(if any) of the sides of the CD/DVD(2 on each side) that hold the drive inplace.
5. Slide the old drive out the front, then slide the new drive in.
6. Put the screws in.
7. Plug the cables into the new drive in the same way they were in the old drive(the cable orientation may be different to the old drive, but this can be dealt with when you get to that point.)
8. Screw the covers back on.
9. Turn on PC.
10. let windows detect the new drive & install the drivers. Then install any third party software that came with the new drive.

I would actually prefer to buy one from circuitcity.com.....and I get special discounts, and rebates when I order through them....I would prefer it be from circuitcity.com.
Thats fine. I've had a bit of a look at some of the drives there and this one seems to be one of the best on offer at that site...i'm not familure with the brand however the reviews(those that know what they are talking about) are good. It burns almost all types of DVD & CD.
If however it is only going to be used by your grandma and only for basic DVD burning you may want to go for something cheaper with fewer features.

Your an animal scrat! Thank you!

I am going to order it right now, and ill let you know after I install it, how everything goes!

Thanks a bunch!

P.S.
You should get paid for this type of stuff.

What kind of work do you do?

By the way Scrat, If I plan on burning a movie that is about an hour and a half long (regular size movie), am I going to want discs that have more then 4.7gb?

Thanks

Ok...you got me there. I havent done much in that area myself, but perhaps one of the other guys/gals on here will be able to help with that part.

If you've got the money to spare you could also buy a small pack of the "Double Layered DVDs" (DL) which will have 9.4GB of space....of course the DVD Player you put it in needs to be able to read DL discs...virtually all do, except for some really old dvd players.

EDIT:
I fix medical equipment...which includes PCs, so i guess you could say i get paid for it :P
