How do SIM cards work?

Not that I want the iPhone however I am very familiar with it. Android phones seem alot better but very few of the phones that are Hyped in the US are in Canada. To my knowledge Canada doesn't have a 4G network either. On that note. Hows the UI for android phones? Where can I find the marketplace?

I have Bell (Canada) I will get a phone compatible with my network or I will get an unlocked phone.

If you don't use a SIM with your current phone, then you don't need a SIM for a new phone. I believe here in the states AT&T and T-Mobile are the only carriers that use SIM cards, you can't take a Verizon phone with no SIM and use that phone on AT&T's network.
