How do you capture video from the computer's DVD player?

Say, your computer has a DVD player capable of read/write. You play your VCD and/or DVD disc using programs like Windows Media Player, RealOne Player. Is it possible to do more than just viewing the video?

How do you take a snapshot? Or if you want to record a particular series of actions within the video, how is it done?
 
if you try to take a snapshot or movie, you see the background and program stuff, but where the video is all you see is a black square. There isnt a way to record the video that is playing on your dvd player, only way to do it is to get a copying programs (they dont allow you to copy copy-protected movies though.)
 
ok, so you can get a snapshot of it, but i dont think you can record movies from it. Please correct me if im wrong
 
well if you are able to take screen shots, then take many screen shots (30 per second) then you can convert those into an avi. i used to do this with cs movies but i dont remember the name of the program.

You can definitely make an exact duplicate of the DVD. There's I know at least half dozen DVD copier software out there that have the ability to duplicate encrypted/protected discs.

That's not what I want. I'm only interested in extracting particular scene (i.e., short clip) from the movie, so I can save it as AVI/MPEG file. Of course I can do it the hard way, that is, play the disc on a stand-alone DVD player; and then use the S-video connection via a capturing device (PCI card). But I thought there could be an easier way.
 
Maybe WinDVR could be capable of this? and for taking screen shots, WinDVD Recorder can do that, and It has some nifty features like using the movie as a wallpaper;)
 
Power DVD will take stills of the movie, but what do you mean you want to capture portions of the movie? Do you want them in DIVX or something?
 
i think he means like if there was 2 minutes of footage in the middle that is really great and he wants to send it to someone, how would he just take out that 2 minutes.
 
You can use VirtualDUB to take out a piece of the video and save that segment.

Run the program and use 'Home' and 'End' keys to select a segment of the clip and file>save segmented avi. [Under Audio and Video leave both to 'direct stream copy']

[VirtualDUB only outputs to avi]

Hi, can you recommend something similar to the above, with maybe more features like editing, or saving (other than just avi format)? What are some of the popular ones?

My computer has Windows Movie Maker and PowerDVD. Do you think they have these features?
 
Erm, probably the only other thing I use for that kind of task is TMPGEnc, which can take out parts in MPEG format, but I think only outputs to that format. Could you tell me what kind of editing features you are looking for?
 
yes windows movie maker will allow you to edit movies and i think save them in mpeg and other file formats, however it might only be able to edit mpegs, thats what i thought at least.
