How do you change a power supply?

I need to know how to change a laptop power supply. Unfortunately I don't have the model number yet. Is there a website that shows with pictures how to do it?

do you mean the external power supply with connector , or inside the Laptop? If you're talking internally, then you can't change the power supply as such, however if you mean that the female plug you connect to has stopped working then this usually means that the pins have broken away from the mobo(a very common laptop fault) and is a "bugger" to rectify-but can be done!!!

please give more details :)

I think what was described to me was that the outside connector on the laptop was busted.

just to clarify... you mean the female connector visible from the outside of the laptop on the back of the laptop.(the bugger to change one)

OR....

The male connector that plugs into the connector on the back of the laptop??(the easy way out)

I haven't heard back from my friend yet.

Just for future reference what do you do for both male and female pins that are bad?

Well if it's the MALE end(that plugs into the back of laptop) then just change mains adaptor, however... if it's the FEMALE end that is in the back of the laptop connected to the motherboard, then usually it involves removing virtually EVERY part of the laptop-

  • hard drive
  • cd/dvd rom drive
  • keyboard
  • motherboard
  • heat transfer plate etc etc
and then you have to solder a new female jack plug to the motherboard(or resolder the old one) without damaging the other motherboard componants through heat transfer and then put it all back together before testing it again!!

A long winded job which I don't like to do and neither do any PC repair shops in my area. I would rather recommend a specialist company and lose the bussiness than spend hours on a job for very little profit and a whole lot of hassle!!!!

Let's hope it's the male end eh ??

I'm not sure were on the same page. I think what has happened is the prong on the back of the laptop has broken off. If that is the case I assume I would have to open it and possibly replace the power supply?
