How do you install the heatsink?

I'm sure this question has been asked before here, but I need help. I'm some-what new at building computers. Today I bought an AMD 3000+ processor that had no heatsink or fan included. So I also bought some thermal paste and a heatsink and fan. Now I want to put it all together. I know how to put the processor on the board and all, but the whole thermal paste thing confuses me. On the bottom of the heatsink that I bought, there is an extremely thin layer of (what I think is) thermal paste (it's grayish). But I was told that I need to apply the thermal paste that I bought seperatally. So now I'm lost. The CPU I bought didn't have any instructions with it. I also heard that I should put some thermal paste on and rotate the heatsink after putting it on...? Can anyone help me?

Thanks

The grayish paste on the bottom of the heatsink is indeed thermal paste. Unless you are overcloking alot this stock paste is adaquete. I'm not sure about the rotating part just put the HSF on by following the instructions and you should be fine :)

no instructions

Thanks for the feedback. I have no instructions for anything at all. What should I do if I wish to apply more thermal paste?

More? There's no need for more. If you want use the paste you bought you need to take off the original paste with xylene or isypropyl alcohol. Then spread a very thin layer on the heatspreader. Some people also like to put some on the HSF. This site explains it better:

Oh wait thats for an A64, is the 3000+ an XP or a athlon 64?

If its the XP without a heatspreader then follow this:
