Iam trying to clear my friends HP nc6000 HD and reinstall OS. I was going to clear the bios, but i have already cleaned the HD and reinstalled XP. If i disconnect that bios battery now, what will happen? How do i know the bios are cleared? I just want to completely clean the computer..What is the best way to go about this..THANKS

Remove the battery for about a minute and that "should" do it. You'll know the bios is cleared as soon as the PC starts. It should tell you to hit "F1 to setup" or "F2 to restore defaults". It of course it might not be exact. Also lots of motherboards have jumpers/pins. You'd put jumper from pins 2-3 to 1-2 for example. This step can usually be ignored and pulling the battery should do the trick.

well my friend just bought the notebook and wanted it completely clean. Iam new to all these things, and would like to really get into them. I guess i read somewhere that the bios can hold information. and i just wanted to erase it. What else could i do to erase the computer of everything and start completely fresh..thanks blue

. As for the information that is held by the motherboard, it's pretty useful info. It's nothing you want to "erase", nor will it "erase". It simply keeps configuration settings saved. If you are experiencing no problems then it's more harm then good. Also as I said your not "erasing" anything. Your simply clearing all the motherboards settings by pulling the battery.
