is it https then the website?

If it's Barclays or selftrade, after clicking on google link is it always starting www. barclays.co.uk then other stuff or www. selftrade.co.uk ? How do you know you're not risking putting in your personal details to fraudsters after googling a site?

Yes a secure site will have https at the beginning. You might also see a lock icon in your browser bar or status bar.

For example, in Google Chrome:

The information you are getting about HTTPS is correct.

You should always treat everything you email or post as if it were being read by a machine looking for key words though. Ever since the advent of the Patriot Act, and probably before, there are computers searching for certain words or phrases that might seem relevant to some real or imagined threat.
