How do you know what kind of memory a computer has?

A friend of mine is having problems with his computer and one conclusion we came to is that he needs more memory in order to be able to download AT&T's Online Protection Program so he can scan his computer for viruses and spyware. When we tried to download it, it said that his computer needs 256 MB of Ram in order to download it and he only has 128 MB of Ram.

I went to System Properties in Control Panel where it tells you what operating system you have, how much memory you have and how fast your CPU is. I thought it also told you what type of memory you have also on this page, but his computer doesn't tell him that in his System Properties. How do I find out what type of memory his computer has? All I know is that his computer is an older Compaq with Windows 98.

Btw, before anyone suggests that he buys a new computer, he can't afford a new computer. And his kids need this computer. Thanks in advance.

Well on compaq's , the older one's go to start--->Settings--->Control Panel--->Compaq Diagnostic's

It tells you what you need to know and more!
(yes I have a Compaq 5722)

If I took the cover off of the case, would the memory chips themselves say on them what type of memory they are?

Yes, but it would be much more simple to download the program CPU-Z and use it. Post up the specifications CPU-Z displays and we can help you determine the exact type of RAM your friend's system needs. Do you have a flash drive you can use to transfer the program to your friend's computer?
