How do you know when your PC needs updating

Besides the obvious computer slowing down, is there another way you can find out if you need to upgrade your computer memory.

My general rule for when it time to upgrade the amount of ram you have:
asumming you are spyware/adware/virus free. A decent test is check your ram usage when running a program that takes up the most ram and it a program you use often. If your ram usage is more then the amount of ram in your computer then it would significant increase your performance by adding enough ram to meet that usage or surpass it and since the program you was running is something you do often it proberly worth your mony also.

note: I say make sure you spyware/adware/virus free because those things can use up lots of ram. If this the case it would be cheaper to eliminate the spyware/adware/virus to see if it brings your ram usage down to a level below the amount of ram you have.

Really, it depends on what you use your PC for. If you need to run a lot of video editing and such, you're gonna need more ram, but if you just get on the internet and type sutff, you won't need much. Ram is a good way to get a performance boost without spending a crapload of money, but only if you've got enough slots for it.

Only upgrade if you need to. I upgrade only when I go to buy some games and find that they won't run on my current system. Then I upgrade what is necessary, be it videocard, ram etc. If you just use a PC for email and web, wait until a new operating system comes out, and see about upgrading then, that should be about every 5 years, which is fine for text based work.
