How do you open a port?

Sorry for the SUPER noob question, I used to know how to do it, but I can't for the life of me do it right now for some reason, might be because I've been up for 30ish hours... Anyways, I need to open port 41952, can someone tell me how to do that?

setup port forwarding in the router. or disable your firewall if using one...or create a rule for the firewall to leave it open. Which applies to you?

Whichever one's easiest I guess, I did it really easily before, but like I said, I can't figure out how this time...

Alright got it, I just shut off my firewall, might not be the best solution, but it works...

Thanks! :D

EDIT: Okay, I just tried it, and it doesn't have my modem, I have a Motorola SB5100.

All ports on your computer will be open unless you have a firewall. If you have a firewall such as Zonealarm, Macafee etc.. then you should be able to open up the program and select what ports you want to be open & closed.

Port forwarding is a different matter and is preformed by a router. All connections off the internet go through your router. Port forwarding is an option within your router settings that basically just directs traffic going through a port to a set computer on your network. EG you could set port 2010 to forward to the ip address 192.168.1.7 which could be your computer. This would mean anything using this port would go directly to this computer.

Ok, I don't know which I need to do, I have the windows firewall, but that's it.

Here's what I'm trying to do, I'm trying to use a program called TVersity to watch AVIs on my 360. It said something about opening that port. I disabled the firewall and music worked, but Videos wouldn't show, I put the videos in there last time when I found out how to open the port or w/e and they worked...
