How do you tell if a program supports dual/quad core CPUs or not?

I'm terrible at computers so please teach me with the basics.

My own understanding:
1. A program that is hyper or multi threaded can utilize a dual or quad core CPUs
2. If a program is single threaded, even if I have a quad core CPU, it won't be able to fully utilize all of its potentials. It will only use one of its cores.

First of all, i don't even know if my understandings are correct.
Please confirm that for me?
And then could you guys tell me how I can check if the program supports multi-core CPUs?

P.S it's Cool Edit Pro 2.1 I'm wondering about, if that helps at all. I tried using AA CS5.5 but the new interface and all that just didn't come natural to me.

Thanks guys. And I know this might be off topic of the forum.
But this forum had the most ppl online, so I thought it would be fastest.
Sorry about that! Please move my thread if it should be elsewhere.

Development on Cool Edit stopped back in 2002 or 2003, so I doubt it supports multicore processing. Just a guess though.
