how does a laptop connect to the internet wirelessly??

hi, I know it is connected either with lan cable through RJ45 port or with WiFi through the installed lan card.

is there any way else that a laptop could connect to the internet wirelessly?? I've heard of the terms **pocket wifi** but what are they?? does it require any special port on the laptop to make it work?

Whenever there are no free wifi or any wifi available. Can I have my laptop connected to the web? what is the most common way to do so? Do I have to subscribe to any services??
 
By tethering to a portable hotspot or your cell phone. A hotspot is about the size of a small cell phone and just connects via the cell towers and shows up as an available wireless network that you connect to.

And yes, they're subscription services. Contact a cell carrier in your area to discuss prices.
 
There are many ways. As you mentioned, via ethernet or WiFi are the most popular, however you can also tether your cell phone or mobile broadband modem using USB, Bluetooth, or an integrated mobile broadband card.

hi so is it a kind of connection like 3G or 4G for the mobile phone and tablets??

what port does it require on the laptop to have the devices to be plugged in? Ethernet port or USB port?

Is it a specification that supports other kinds of *wireless* connection in addition to the free wifi provided by McDonald or Starbucks etc...

I told you it shows up as an available wireless network. Other common adapters are USB based.

Hotspot devices are like cell phones, you receive cellular data and the device emits a wifi network so you can use the cellular uplink on other devices.

They are also available in USB format known as 'dongles'. (giggity)

Most cell phone carriers offer these devices and plans on their websites.

Cell phones and mobile broadband modems can connect using either WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB.

Several years ago, there were some netbooks (nokia, samsung, ...) that you could insert a SIM card and use the mobile network to access the internet. I'm not sure whether this technology is still in use or not. Probably there are some USB devices to emulate that in standard laptops. But my guess is that it was superseded by smartphones and tablets.

You're talking about what I already mentioned, mobile broadband cards. Many tablets and some laptops come with these integrated, they function the same as USB or mobile hotspots as far as costs go.

As Geoff said, he already mentioned that. But you can still buy laptops with WWAN cards and a data plan through a carrier.
