How does game graphics work?

I mean...for example I'm playing Battlefield Hardline on..say GTX 660 on ultra
now I'm playing the same game on a better card..say TITAN Z (why not?) with the same settings
now...my question is...will I see graphical improvements? will the game look prettier than before? or is it just the fps which will get prettier?
 
Performance would improve. The settings are determined when you set them (ultra, medium, etc.) and the power of the card determines how smooth it works at that setting.
 
its all relative. theoretically, 750mhz vs. 1500mhz should double performance, allowing say, a game where you get 30fps to allow 60fps. then there's gpu architecture, like 1644 cuda cores (gtx 970) vs 3072 cuda cores (titan x). this should almost double performance as well.

however, games that dont have a lot of instructions to complete, or lower graphics games, may not fully take advantage of all the cores and things that the gpu has. those games wont stress the gpu much and because of that the gpu is able to put out a higher framerate.

Assuming you were able to play the game at ultra settings, then for the most part the only thing a better card will do is give you increased performance (FPS). However, for example if you are playing a newer Directx12 game but you have a DX11 or older card, then you will see graphical improvement with a DX12 card.

and increasing fps only benefits you up to your screens refresh rate. for instance running 120 fps only really displays 60fps on a 60hz screen. obviously a lot more complicated than that but you get it.

I can tell you one thing, even though a 60Hz panel may show a max of 60Hz, if you're getting 250FPS you can definitely notice the difference in input lag for mouse particularly. Gaming on a 60Hz monitor is fine, but gaming on a 60Hz monitor at above 60FPS is a definite improvement, which is why i never use Vsync.

lol last time I tried turning down my screen to 60hz I got a slight headache from the screen tearing but OK ;)
 
Leave the refresh rate alone, max the game graphics and if/when it drops below 60FPS you can turn on adaptive vsync if you must
