How does Internet 2 work?

There are some colleges such as MIT and CalTech that has Internet 2. What exactly is Internet 2? I know it provides each computer on the college’s LAN with like a 30 meg connection. Do these colleges just have like an OC12 strait to their LAN that provides each computer on the network with that much bandwidth, or is it something else.

Because 30mbps x 300 computers is like 9 gbps. THAT MUCH BANDWITH WOULD REQUIRE A OC192 STRAIGHT TO THE COLLEGE! That would probably cost like $50,000 + a month.

do you realize how much money these colleges get? they get millions per month. They can afford buying new computer every few months for the whole campus. I'm not surprised they dont have 100gbps!

Yeah, a lot of universities like CalTeck and MIT also work on research grants which provide funding for technology upgrades like that. Therefore, most "Research 1" universities, or universities that are in the first tier of research projects usually have a very good technology base.
