How does this whole fan thing work?

Dude...no offence but with some of these questions, are you sure you're ready to build yourself a computer?

Anyway, there should be some pretty obvious places to stick the fans. Some cases have little plastic holders, others have holes that you use special fan screws(just really thick screws that dig into the plastic)

Front fans pull air in, rear fans blow air out. Fans on the side usally pull air in(say down to processor)

And for size, there are converters, but it's best to use whatever your case can manage. There's probably something on newegg that says what fans it can use. One of my cases could use a 120mm on the rear and two 80mm on the front, as an example...

It's easy putting in fans.
Not for me.... untill i found out that it was my stupidity :o

Im not sure about the fans that you are getting... but if it looks like the screws dont fit, they do. Use the tiny ones with the little knicks in them, they are the screws that thread themselves.... I didnt know that.

lol, when I bought my first PC fan I had no idea how to screw it into the case... I looked at all my PC screws, and none of them 'srewed' into the fan/case... I resorted to blue tack :P

Until a couple of months ago I found some tight screws that actually grinded themselves into the plastic holes on the fan, which obviously held it...

yeah, it's a pain in the butt to thread the screws, you sorta just gotta force it in.
