Ive got an old pc at home and have just sent off for a ubuntu free disc what will hapen after ive loaded it as my os,what would you use as a browser to get on the net or does it all come up and set up as soon as you connect to net, also will it write over the old xp os that is on pc ?

You can run it live off the disc, meaning you can boot the OS without installing it, so you can try it and see if you like it.

It comes with Firefox as the default browser, so surfing is easy as long as your hardware is recognized.

Ubuntu is probably as complete as XP / Vista in terms or programs you might use. As Bodaggit said, it comes with FireFox for the internet. It also has Gimp - a photo editting software, Pidgin - for MSN'ing, lots of little games, a word processor, calc etc..

When you are installing it you can choose whether to write over your XP, or create a new partition. If you choose the later you will still be able to use XP.

Hope that helps, Doug.

I would definitely disagree with that, and you can't play many games with it.

To me, Ubuntu is a basic OS that lets you surf the web and check your email.

I wouldn't use it as a primary OS because I play DirectX games and stream pod casts.

Just because it doesnt support many games doesnt mean it isnt a complete OS.

The author of this thread implied it wasnt for gaming by saying its an old computer.

Ubuntu is a fantastic OS and you will learn alot about computers while using it.

It should conntect straight to the internet so long as your hardware is supported, my guess is it probably is. Come back if you have any issues.
