how good a processor is really needed

I can play games on max setting on a Pentium 4 3 ghz, so how good of a processor do you really need for extreme gaming. In my experience I've found the the major factor in gaming is usually the video card and not the processor. What do you guys think?

i agree its pretty much the GPU and RAM these days, now even more so with dual core CPUs

okay well how about your FPS

RAM doesn't even matter than much. As long as you have a gig or good RAM, and a decent hard drive with plenty of extra space(not fragmented either) you should do pretty well in games. Most of the stress is on your GPU anymore. Now I would strongly suggest getting a dual core processor, but you don't have to go all out.

Depends on the game. I agree as far as the GPU and eye candy, but performance isn't just eye candy.

eye candy? ...no

GPU is really all that matters with 1gb ram and almost any CPU

IMO an OCed C2D with 1gb of ram(2GB over time) and upgrading the GPU every year-2years as long as PCIe 16x lives will fair quite well for a long time

is this assumption correct?

It depends on the gaming experience and what else you do with the computer. There are always a lot of ''ifs' when coming to gaming and computers. Computers are evolving faster and faster. There is no way of determining at what point this or that is going to be ok, or good, and obsolete. I mean a p4 and 1 gig of pc3200 and an x700 can play Oblivion and most games nowadays. It just depends on the eye candy and special effects a person wants. It is my opinion that most gamers are computer enthusiasts, at least those who primarily play on PC's and want more than just to play a game, but want to 'max' out the settings.

I wouldn't make any assumptions, and upgrade when possible the best you can to stay on top of things.

You obviously dont play BF2 maxed with a P4 3.0 and a 7600GT. You may have it on high, but not maxed.

And the processor plays a significant role. Going from a Pentium4 631J 3.0Ghz to a Core Duo 1.83Ghz is amazing. Games play almost as good on my laptop as they did on my P4 and x1900GT!

I think he actually might, I Just about got away with it on my old 3700 SD @ 2.88 with a 7600GT XT:P
