how hard is it to recover

pictures, movies, and music from a dead HD?
And can someone explain why it might cost so much to have everything taken off one?

Because the drive is crashed. The process is very labor intensive. I'm sure you will do a better job with backup in the future.

Does the drive still work but all your data is missing? If so you may be able to use software to get it back (like GetDataBack or Active Data Recovery, etc).

If the drive doesn't work anymore the reason it costs so much to send it away is because they take the drive apart and clone the drive (usually sector by sector) to either a working drive or other storage media to send back to you.

well, one day i left to the store and i came back and my computer would not boot! for some odd reason i had a feeling that it was my 80gb HD. I took it out and it booted up fine. I never had a problem with that HD until that day. I see some number show up on SATA 1 so the motherboard is detecting something but it wont boot with that HD connected.

I talked to this guy on the phone and he said he has the skills to do the job. I think i'll go to him when i get some money saved up.

quote if im wrong Cromewell.
i read somewhere they actually mount the platter in the old drive in another comparable drive. always had an interest in trying though.

On the other hand i do these incidental backups often enough. i think around every two months.

I don't know the specifics, if they use a same model drive and move the platters there or whatever, but they do take them out of the old drive.
