How hot is too hot?

I have an AMD 64 2800+ 1.8ghz in a LanParty UT nF3 250 mobo inside a Antec Super LanBoy case with two 120mm fans, front and rear. At idle my cpu temp is between 43-47c and when I start to push it temp rises to about 54c. What temp. should I start to be concered with and possibly think about another cpu cooler? Also, I bought the "Processor in the Box" so it came with a heat sink and fan from AMD and the fan speed is about 3200rmp.
 
Personally above 55C load i think is getting close to unstable for some chips. I think the A64 die temp is like 70-80C isn't it. I'd say get one now if you can afford it, but if it's not budgeted then you most likely don;t really NEED it. Running at those temps 24/7 should definetly not kill anything or cause instability, but it's not "preffered" for some people (like me). Personally i buy an aftermarket cooler b4 i even build my rigs, running stock just isn't an option even if its like 20C. But that's just me being stupid :)
 
ive heard that your comp should not run more then 23 degrees above room temperature...make sense to you guys?
 
Mine runs at around 50c when playing games etc. which is more that 23 above room temp.
54c doesnt sound too high, its a pretty standard jump.
 
Ok, I'll stay like this for a little while, but I will purchase a cooler. Can anyone recommend a fan/heatsink ? (on a budget).
 
The Volcano12 comes with its own heatsink.

If you really need to take the fan off then it should should be obviously screwed on. Easily removable.
 
I was looking for an easy way out so I thought maybe I could buy just a better fan that would screw onto the existing heatsink. Don't really feel like prying off heatsink.

Its not that hard...if it's one of them silly ones with 3 latches (like mine :o) then get another person to give you a hand.

Thats good for a stock cooler :)

What happens if ur room temp is 60C? (i.e., then ur fukt)

Is there a way to replace the just the fan without the heatsink?

You might as well replace both at the same time but yes you can do just the fan (unscrew it and mount a new one)

The Volcano12 comes with its own heatsink.

Except the volcano12 wont fit ... youll need/want the Venus12

Might as well .. and replace the silly thermal pad thats there with some nice thermal goop :D
 
I think I will visit Micro Center this weekend and do it the right way after I remove the foot of snow expected to hit on Sat.
