How hot should laptops get?

I have a compaq Presario R3000, mostly for school and doing photoshop work and such. I bring a portable mouse with me and every so often I play a game or so. It's pretty nice and can handle some pretty new games. When I start to play game I can feel the vent on my hand and it is extremely hot air coming out, almost feels too hot. Is this normal for a laptop to run this hot? Should I try and dust it out?

Laptops tend to run hot simply because all of the hardware is crammed into such a small space. i remember using a laptop in school that had a 6 gig hard drive and an AMD K6-2 300MHz (not exactly power hungry) and it would be really uncomfortable to have it on my lap for any length of time. I wouldn't worry about

i had a samsung and i used to use it in the car on my lap i ended up having to put a pillow underneath it because it was very hot!

As you can see from my sig... I have an Acer with a 3.4 Prescott.. Its so hot that in winter.. I do not need to use heating we just all sit round the laptop... So they save on heating bills as well!!! :-)

I have a Rock Mentor Laptop and it run at around 30 degrees (estimated) it is only a 233mhz with 48mb running windows XP pro ...Dont ask how i did it ..but i can get any temp software to run on it ...can u tell me what temp software will run on laptops .thanks

My Averatec gets rather warm. Oddly enough, it gets rather hot towards the front. Not sure what's up there...maybe the HD? The processor area has never gotten too bad, but there have been a few times when the fan just wouldn't cut off. Usally this is when it's on my desk and can't get as much air.

Sometime, try using it on your lap and make sure the fan vents are completely open.

BTW, I have a laptop cooler if anyone wants one. It's a bit larger than I'd like for my Averatec, and seeing as the fans run all the time with my other one I'm trying to sell, it's not a good peripheral to have with it. I guess PM me if your intersted. It's a 3 fan model. Not bad if your machine doesn't constantly run the fans...

yes it is, everything is crammed together and it all becomes very hot. It does get anoying, but you should be glad, its a sign of the laptop being able to get rid of its heat inside, much better than the heat slowing down and possibaly breaking your computer. Better out than in :P

Damnit you beat me to it :P. After reading this story i stopped putting a laptop on my lap...cant be to carefull like that :D

lol ya i remember seeing that story in the news and ever since have been putting a pillow (actualy has an awsome function, and its more comfortable than placing the laptop straight on ur lap) in between my legs and the laptop. :D So if ur afraid to use the laptop on ur lap but dont wanna use a desk, the pillow will always be waiting. :P

My laptop occasionaly gets incredibly hot, it once got so hot that it just froze and wouldn't switch on again, but it was because it had forgot to turn the fans on, i was wondering why evrything was being so quiet! :) :)
