I am currently trying to convince my wife into letting me build a new computer soon and was wondering how long my build will be good for. I am currently using a toshiba qosimo laptop i bought back in late 2007 for all my gaming. It has held up fairly well so far but is starting to show its age. I can only play skyrim on low because of the dual core 2.0ghz processor and the gts 9700m card on it. I paid $1300 for the laptop in 2007 before i was married.

This is the new build I would like to do and was wondering how long you all think it will be good for before it gets to out of date to use. She is worried that im gonna spend $900 on a computer that will be useless in 3 more years.

I have a older hdd i can use untill the prices fall back down if they ever do.

well that looks good but i'd look at something more like this. 1866 isn't worth the price really, and for gaming 6 cores won't be used by anything other than fsx for a good while, and this cpu can be unlocked to 6 cores or overclocked like hell on its 4. and don't u need an os, unless you have a retail copy then you need this one

and also bast buy still has 1tb seagate barracudas for like 55 i think it was.

It really depends what on software you want to run. The build you picked looks pretty good and should last longer than almost any laptop. The video card you are looking at is powerful enough to handle all video games I know of. Laptops really compromise processing power in order to make them portable.

I would go with the AMD Phenom II 960T Quad-Core Processor Jonnyp11 suggested and take a look at this motherboard:

GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 Socket AM3+ Motherboard - $108

Full towers are really large. I would look at this one and save yourself around $90:

Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $55
