How many watts needed?

How big would my PSU have to be to power an athlon 64 2800, 7200 HD, geforce fx5200 128mb, 2 cd/dvd drives, 512-1gig of ram?

I was thinking probably 350W...
 
you could prolly get off with doing a 300 watt.....look at my specs....and that has run on a 300 watt before

I had that and I was using a 420watt and I had plenty of power.......even with a cheap raidmax power supply that had been supplied with the case :)

were talking about a single processor, a single hard drive, a video card which, doesnt require a 4-pin molex connection from the power supply, 2 optical drives, and one stick of RAM......300 is plenty....(even with a cheap raidmax power supply that had been supplied with the case :))


*note all of the below parts ran on a 300 watt power supply which was both generic and old*

damn near what I had on 420watts and it was perfect......maybe overkill I don't know but I wouldn't want to run out
 
I've got almost the same setup in my PC as you do, and I've used a 400watt cheap powersupply that came with my case with no problems. You can get away with a 350 though I'm sure, but if you are considering upgrading the CPU or Video Card, then you may want to get more power than you currently need.
 
yeah im not telling you to slim your way out of it or anything, if theres anything you dont take a shortcut on and try to save money, its your power supply.....be sure to buy a professional one, im just answering your original question of "how many watts will you need"
 
Cheap psu's should be avoided like the plague, at least if you care about your hardware. It's not a myth.

You can't buy a $50 case and expect to get a decent psu along with it, won't happen.

Yes I understand that now...found out the hard way. Actually I didn't but my brother went ahead and bought a $55 case w/ 450W PSU and guess how long it lasted? 3 DAYS LOL.

I know there will always be exceptions and that some crappy PSU's will last longer, but I'm not going to purchase one like that. I'm convinced.
 
yeah and as a side note.....usually those cheap power supplies are like half a lb....they seriously feel so light, and fake, and just shitty, you know its a quality power supply if you pick up that bad boy and it puts some strain in your back :D
