How many watts needed?

yeo

I have a couple of buddies that have it and it works wonderfully.....and they are a bit more into the high end gaming and stuff.

Cheap psu's should be avoided like the plague, at least if you care about your hardware. It's not a myth.
Shhhhhhhhhh! You're ruining my tech support business :P

You can't buy a $50 case and expect to get a decent psu along with it, won't happen.
It can happen ... from time to time ... if you get lucky (my Chenmin601 came with a decent Enermax350)

1. Aspire's focus (at least for PSUs) is looks, not stability, futureproofing nor performance. They look pretty to some people I guess but thats it
2. Going to the maker's website http://www.aspireusa.net/ I dont see a single note about warranty or more importantly, the actual rating and specification of the PSU .... not a good sign ... in fact they dont even list the ratings on the box ... not a good sign ... a bit of hunting reveals http://www.techfreaks.org/reviews/aspire500w/Img_0379.jpg .... 34A off the 12V rail ... very impressive -- damn impressive at that -- but why not make note of that somewhere? Perhaps those numbers are "extremrely optimistic" and in controlled environments

A note about their warranty
Due to the low +12V readings, I e-mailed Aspire USA about it. Their response was that the voltages were within tolerance levels as if that's all they were striving for. I responded to the e-mail and again voiced my concern (this time with more detail), I got no response. After that exchange, I began to wonder about the warranty. I proceeded to look for information on the box, power supply, and their website. None of them had any mention of a warranty. Regretfully, I contacted Aspire again inquiring about a warranty. They said that they provided their suppliers with the option of buying a warranty with the power supply. Apparently the supplier that Newegg got their power supplies from didn't opt for this option. So in effect, the only warranty that ever existed was Newegg's 30-day return policy. It seems that Aspire needs to do some work before they can be a recognized brand.

Numerous web sources quote issues with the 5V rail and more importantly, the 12V rail
