How much did you spend on your operating system?

I dug up an article from 2006 about the worth of Windows XP Home.
The author calculates the likes of HP, Dell, and Staples pay around
$30 for a copy of Windows XP Home. But if you build your own
system, you would have to pay between $99 to $199 for a copy.

In this 2007 article, the author purchases a computer with Windows
preinstalled, and then contacts customer service to return his unused
license. After quoting an OEM copy of Windows costs $89, they send
him a refund for $52.50.

In 2007 Dell started selling Ubuntu loaded computers, and the
"Windows tax" was valued at $50.

Eric Raymond once famously predicted that when the
price of PCs dropped to below $300 that Microsoft would "cease
to exist" because nobody would pay an extra one-third of the
cost of a computer in order to get Windows. That didn't happen,
largely because of the price incentives given by software companies
as described above. Whether or not Linux bundling will put pressure
on Microsoft's OEM pricing remains to be seen, but it can't hurt.
What are the options for people building $200 computers that
require Windows to run certain games and applications?

How much are you paying for your operating system?

Do you think if we pooled 20,000 to 50,000 people, and
approached Microsoft for a bulk discount, we could get Windows
7 for < $50 a copy? :D

omg!
i bought 3pk oem winxp pro +sp2 for 400 (with the purchase of a hardware)
i've only used two so far.
if i build another pc in the next couple of years, and if windows 7 is FAIL!, then i will use the third, otherwise, i don't know what will happen to it.

I paid 139.00 for my XP Pro x64, and don't go bashing the program please. I like it and had no trouble finding drivers for it.

I got my retail copy of vista ultimate for $90 off a guy on craigslist. It was a bit of a gamble, but the guy pulled through for me!

In the past I've bought around 3 OEM licenses for XP Home/Pro @ around £60 each.

Also 1 Retail Copy of XP Home from Staples for £190

$300ish Vista ultimate retail, as i had heard there were alot of trouble migrating vista x64 oem from one mobo to another, and i got ultimated because i needed x64 discs without waiting 2 months for microsoft to ship me them lol. But for budget pc's people need to look at linux distros like ubuntu....
