How much faster

Ok right now im on a 2.0 ghz pentium 4 with 512 ram. How much faster will a athlon 64 X2 4200 with 1gb of dual channel ram be.

well you can overclock the 4200 way farther than the Pentium 4 (your 2 GHZ) so i would go with the 4200 and a gig of ram. the ram will make it go faster

what!
we dont know that he is an overclocker (and mostly likely not given the question)
we have no idea what the rig is for, if all he is doing is surifng and emailing then he will see zero improvements

Why not go with a 3800, and get it higher Clocked than an 4800 with no sweat!

3800 are a steal @ £220 and can go faster than FX-60 On water and with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro (£17) you can get to 2.4 Ghz without breaking into a sweat!

With RAM, if you want performance, go with aMushkin 1GB PC3200 Dual Channel Kit

So is the 4200 really not worth the extra money over the 3800. should i go with the 3800 and maybe get 2gb of ram would that be alot better. thanks

Well it depends what the rigs for, if its for gaming, which I assume it is if you want 2gig ram for it, id say go for the 3800 and just get 1.5gig ram, get a better cooler with the cash you save and go can overclock it more than you could with 2gig:)

Yeah, go with an X2 3800, get some decent branded memory and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro- quiet and cool and really helps the OCing

for what you do, you have made the right choise with a dual core Processor!

yes its good, not the tightest timing but bang for buck it is good

ok well back to my real question here, there is going to be a large difference in speed bettween a 5ish year old 2ghz pentium 4 with 512 of ram compared to a new x2 4200 with a gb of ram correct.

Yes, in all other tasks than simple surfing/emailing etc.

Comparatively, 200MHz faster. But that's prolly not very useful of an anaswer (correct as it may be). As for a meaningful answer, it will be more-than-significantly-noticeably faster

the ram will make it go faster
Memory will make computing faster but it wont make the chip any faster

1. Damn you guys pay a boatload for them
2. Why would water be needed for 2.6GHz?

go with aMushkin 1GB PC3200 Dual Channel Kit
1. Mushkin also makes non-performance oriented memory
2. The dual channel "kit" factor doesnt affect anything

should i go with the 3800 and maybe get 2gb of ram would that be alot better. thanks
Well it depends on what the bottleneck is in what you do ... but since you're asking, you probably wont ever notice. So go with the cheapest route

id say go for the 3800 and just get 1.5gig ram
Which will perform potentially worse as you lose out on 50% of memory bandwdith

some gaming some video/photo/music editing and jsut all around use.
Odds are you wont notice: if you can afford it, go for the 4200 and 1GB ... if you want to OC, make sure you dont skimp out on the memory ... but since good memory is expensive, you'll more than likely have to drop down to the 3800

decent branded memory
Brand doesnt mean all that much. Most if not all, makes make the full spectrum of memory products

is the corsar value select ram good. cause i could get 2 gb of that with the money i save on the processor.
Sure but if you're buying the box for overclocking, dont expect all that much from it

there is going to be a large difference in speed bettween a 5ish year old 2ghz pentium 4 with 512 of ram compared to a new x2 4200 with a gb of ram correct.
Depends on what you're doing but it's prolly safe to say that there is a boatload of difference

ok thank you all. im not going to be overclocking much at least not right off the start so im going to go with the 4200 and a gig of dual channel ram.

Im going to go with corsair value select. im on a budget so i couldnt go for anything more expensive but im not going overclock much or at all so im not to worried about it.

Good call, that's tried-and-true memory ... although if you look around you might be surprised at what you can find

If you can get Corsair Value Select PC3200 2x512 CL2.5 ($73.99) although for a bit more, Kingston HyperX PC3200 2x512 [email protected] ($88.50) is prolly worth the jump even if just for the potential :)
