How much ram is enough?

I am building a computer and am wondering how much RAM I should get. Is 1GB enough or should I go for 2GB? I am on a $600-$700 budget on building the entire computer, so I am looking for any opinions.
 
1G will get you buy, but beleive it or not, you're machine will still have to use some of your HD for virtual memory. I've run out more than once when I had 1G physical and 512M used on the swap! Man I didn't know how hungry some things were!
 
Well on my other pc (which im using now), it has 256MB Physical RAM and only 298MB are being used in the page file. I have AIM, MSN, IE, and notepad open as well.
 
Well of course if you don't do much you don't need a ton of RAM. When I last ran out, I was using premiere. Then with FEAR, 1G isn't enough(without a paging file I mean. Run anything else behind fear, you need another .5G at least...
 
well yeah, more ram the better, but he's building a budget pc..so 1 gig is enough, he should spend the rest of the money on something else.
