how much should i pay

so my friend want me to buy his old desktop. i could put it to use, but not sure how much i should pay for it. here are most of the specs

standard mid tower case
socket 478 pentium 4 2.4ghz (no ht)
gigabyte socket 478 motherboard
2 gigs of ddr 400 ram
dvd burner
80 gig ide hard drive
some cheapo psu
key board/mouse

he said he was wanting around $125 to $150....what do ya think, how much should i offer him thats reasonable...thanks
 
Well, i bought a del gx 280 off ebay for my bro as a simple gaming rig. i bought it for 65$

specs
2.8ghz ht p4
1 gig of ram dunno that mhz
120gigs of hhd.
dvd/cd/floppy lol


So id pay 50 for that thing, mines a lil newer, its the 775 socket, little faster ram, fast proc, id say 50 is fair.
 
$125-$150 seems about right

What is it capable of upgrading to? If you could swap in a newer GPU and a decent P4 HT, that'd make for a pretty decent rig.

$75-$100 no more than that seeing how its old technology, doesn't matter if the parts are new or not.
 
^ That could be right as well...depends on what it can be upgraded to. If it can take the 90nm Prescott models with HT, it may be worth a bit more....they're ~$30 used and are still able to do anything besides heavy gaming.
 
It still doesn't matter what it can be upgraded to, it's old technology. There is no way I would pay more than 75 for that machine.
 
well heres been an update on whats i decided to do,...

so the computer came with all that i described in the thread, but it also came with an 9600 all in wonder card, but no harness dongle so i cant hook it up to a monitor, because those cards come with a certain kind of harness. the dvd drive didnt work, and the hard drive is a 120 gig, not an 80. i ended up paying 50 bucks rather than the 80-100, and im using the case for my athlon II x4 w/ gtx260. ive used the 120 gig hd for cloning my os, and the rest i think i will put on ebay along with this computer and some other processors, ddr and ddr2 ram, and other parts that i have that are all pretty much new, but not in use. so o think i mad a decent deal. what do you think
