what i would do is i would only do it when the registry builds up or i dont have much stuff on the hdd and not too many software then i would just do it since it will run faster right after a fresh install.
I have to do it like every 3 months because stuff stops working and I get too many error messages or programs start crashing. Pisses me off. Especially because my HD is always cleen of viruses / ad and spyware.
And i dont do it that often, mainly because i can combat most things that stop workign and patch it all up, but on the rare occasion that it completely dies, its usually about once every 6-7 months
My desktop hasn't been used much so it's still running fine. My laptop is alright, but I might go on and reload just to clean it up. Normally, I try to every 6 months or so. I don't like relying too much on the PC over backups, so keeping a fairly freash copy of windows on it prevents major failures(most of the time ) Plus I have to keep other backups...
users computers, I probably reimage several per a week, my own personal computer its about 1.5 to 2 years, or whenever i have any major hardware failure or upgrade I always start fresh. However, I just started using this to make cloning back ups easier, so now I may do it more often since I can reimage my machine in a matter of minutes over the network.
When I had 98 installed it was twice a year due to blue screens of death, crashes galore but since xp it's been running for over a year now and not one crash
But it is begining to slow, 16 seconds on boot when new and 50 seconds now.
I first bought a PC running XP in 2004 and didn't have to reinstall XP until 2006 because I did some major housecleaning, swapped hard drives around, and added SP2.
Now, Win95, I had to reinstall like clockwork every 14 months!

Well, I havent done yet in 2 yearss. cuz i never allow mal viruses and others to attack my pc.. besides you need to update antivirus once a week.. that well save it for reiinsalling...
I try not to reformat if i can avoid it because i have a shit load of programs and things and i don't like to keep reinstalling them. Now that i have vista on both machines and its running smoothly i hope to not do it for a long time to come...
