How powerful is crossfire?

I'm working on building some computers, and I was wondering how much of a performance increase ATI crossfire makes. For example, will dual ATI Radeon 4670 video cards match up, or be more powerful than, an ATI Radeon 4890, or a Radeon 5870?

2x 4670's are not worth crossfiring... the better option is always one more powerful card... but if really want to do crossfire i'd get 2x 4850's

Just make sure your powersupply can handle it.

So basically what your saying is that it's really nothing like dual-core processing? No significant performance increase?

Yes, because very few games actually support dual graphics cards.

It's a bit like quadcores - the hardware is out, and it helps with current software, but very few things can take full advantage of it.

on average youll notice a 10-30% increase in FPS on games. My Video encoding has gotten faster by 3 mins per dvd with 2nd gpu

You don't get twice the frame rate, so why pay twice the price?

That's my opinion on multiple GPU's.

Yeah,spynoodle...get a 4890 now,or wait for the higher end 5000 series

I personally dont need a super high end card so I am just waiting for the nvidia dx11 cards to come out as the 5 series will prob drop in price
