How reliable are QVLs?

How reliable are those lists?

What I mean is, wanting to upgrade from 32GB to 64GB, I downloaded the RAM QVL for my Asus Z170-P from the ASUS website.

There are few DDR4 64GB sets listed in there but, the ones that are actually listed, come up has 8x8 kits when the MB only has 4 slots...What gives?

Should I not worry with the QVL and just go with a popular DDR4 4x16 kit, ie. G.Skill Ripjaws V or G.Skill Sniper?

Thanks!

I've never used the qvl lists, just buy a good brand. They cant test each and every ram available.

QVL lists are direct from the manufacture and should be followed. I did and the RAM I have hasn't been an issue. The motherboard manufacture tests that RAM so you know it should work. If it says 8x8 then it's an error on their part, but I'm sure that RAM will work. You should notify Asus of their mistake in the QVL list.
