How safe are lan parties?

I'm wanting to host a lan party (through wired network & firewall) at my house, but I'm wondering about how open the pcs will be to spyware, viruses, etc. My parents think that my computer (which is actually very important since it is how I make my money) would be compromised or at least at risk if we hooked up alot of computers with who knows what installed on them. I suggested hooking them up to our rouder and playing online in a locked server but my dad thinks that is still unsafe. Is there any way of knowing? I can't just say something like 'well lots of people have lan parties, and they never have problems' because that's too vague. any suggestions?

run some antispyware and antivirus software on all the pc's before they hook up to the network, call it a house rule :)

i thought about having everyone run adaware SE and spybot S&D before we start...that might be too much though. i'm not sure if it's going to happen, the parents seem pretty set.

worst case scenerio, if you really really really want to game, make everyone do a clean install lol, buy like 20; 80 gigs or sumthing, and then use those, then return them

har har chuckle chuckle :D

sensible chap, keep your parents happy, after all they did donate your computer. they probably think that if you want to play games, you can buy your own
