How the heck do i host my website

Ive designed my site most of the way, few enough bugs to host, ive got a domain name (a .com version)... but now what, ive been to a couple free web hosting sites, and i was soooo baffled by how to upload and all that stuff... 5 bruises later i come begging for info.

You are most likly going to have to find a paid web host. After you get a web host you need to ask(Or they should actually tell you first) what the nameservers are, then you need to go to where your domain was registered log in, then change your nameservers to the server you are hosting from.

You can get a place to host your stuff free at geocities.com, but it is kinda limited.
But its a place to start.

i cant believe in this day and age people are still recommending and referring people to geocities, christ its a crap-hole it really is.... For about £20 a year you can get a good host if you shop around, specifically www.web-mania.co.uk i have 2 of my 5 sites runnign from those hosts.

If you dont need much space you cam get away with 5$ a year with a reliable server  It all just dpeends on your requirments.

Also geocities IS better then you think, but onlyfor there rellibility. They have almost no downtime and great support.

Almsot no host that i can think of has any substantial downtime, or else they wouldnt be a host, quoting that as somethign special is a bit of a null point... The servers are slow due to overcrowding and its got ad's plastered on it (or at least there was the last time i checked)

I'm comparing this to other free servers, Show me a faster one with the same amount of downtime with less ads :)

Other free places give you "more to work with" but geocitites also has things like no file size limits(for the sapce they give you, which isn't to much) only an ad on a page, not pop ups or banners that stretch across the page, and It is faster and up mroe then most free hosts.

If you seem so sure im obviously not going to change your mind, so lets agree to disagree, i think its crap, you think its good, end of story.

Well I havn't seen anytype of augument comparing to free hosts, so If there's no debate we cant agree now can we? :) (Which isn't exactly bad is many cases)

1and1.com has hosting at 2.99 or 4.99 a month i think its real cheap and ive heard good things about them. thats where i am going in november for hosting

hrm, ive solved my previous problems, and i feel like a total idiot about how i couldnt fix them eariler, now im just wondering, im going to go for pay, since from what i've seen, free is junk most of the way, especially with domain transfers... Im considering 1&1 for the hosting, the "sale" on hostin looks nice, but does anyone have any other recommendations for me?

Note: im pretty sure this isnt the case, but 1&1 has this wierd hosting thing already set up with templates and junk... what im wondering is... do they just have the standard html submission and uploading? because i already have everything done on dreamweaver, and i dont need to discover that my new hosting place wont host my work the way i've set it up...
