How to achieve top performace?

My pc is running somewhat well at the moment but was wondering what I can do to eliminate all bad files and do a thorough clean of the pc. What would that consist of?

I have been told things here and there about disk defrag, installing spybot search and destroy but I am still left hanging as to what proper computer maintenance and repair consists of.

Thank you.

Any suggestions from anyone would help.

I don't have a full answer to your question. But i use Tweak XP Pro and that can clear loads of useless files and such.;)
 
Besides defragmenting a drive on occasion there are few other things like cleaning up now useless temp folders left behind by software installers where freewares like CCleaner have a use. Reduction of things that automatically load up along with Windows is another idea to free up ram. But the one thing that most are simply uninformed about is a cleanup of the system registry.

After any long period of time where several changes by installing and removing programs has taken place you'll find a buildup of now invalid entries left behind by uninstallers and removal tools that leave "orphans" behind. An excellent tool for all versions of Windows from 95 to Vista is RegCleaner. That can be used for both manual removal of entries or the automatic registry cleanup.

Firstly everything you need is free, cccleaner ,spybot search and destroy,avg anti virus , avg anti spyware , windows defender and reg cleaner.
all the above programs are great at keeping your pc running smooth .
windows own built in defrag program is good enough no need to pay for expensive defrag programs i run a defrag once a fortnight and the antipsy programs once a week along with the anti virus software the reg cleaners i run fortnightly whether this is exessive i dont know but that is what i feel is correct hope this helps.
 
RegCleaner is a great one for a periodic run after a number of software changes. You can also remove registry keys in the main window if you have to manually remove a program where the uninstaller fails or there's no uninstaller or listing found in control panel.

The AVG Anti-Spyware Remover formerly known as Ewido is a 30day shareware there while AVG 7.5 is the actual free version for home not commercial use. Diskkeeper was great for older versions of Windows like 98SE where it took all day to defrag a 120gb ide drive. XP saw that time cut down to 45min.! In fact that's about what you see on a 250gb drive now.
