i have heard a bunch of different things when puting a cpu fan on a cpu. the amount the size of a pea...the asize of a rice grain (uncle bens quick cooking white stuff) mash it all down the the cpu fan or use an old credit card.

what is the proper amount and method to put it on?. Is there some special heating cycle you have to do to it after?
 
If you havnt bought the stuff yet, i would suffest Zalman STG-01 over the AS5, because its better and way easyer to apply. if you already have it, jimmimac answered it i gues ^^
 
this actually depends, on some intel processors, they are not open core. Basically the thermal paste is really there to make sure that the heat sink and the processor have a good clean solid connection. what I do is apply a bit more than needed and use a small cotton swab to even it out smooth acros the processor core so there is no air bubbles and remove any excess thermal paste with the swab part. Then attach the heat sink and make sure its flush across the processor.

On processors like this, apply less over the core and make sure its even and smooth.

On processors like this one, you can apply it all over the processor because nothing is exposed. Notice the metal cap all over the processor.

To clean it use isotropyl alcohol since it is non conductive.

The heat sink compound is there to make sure the connection to the heat sink is flush and that all heat is transfered to the heat sink.
 
so im looking at my intel e6600 and the back has a raised silver metal "deck" on the back...i only apply the paste to the deck right...not to the very edge?


the other sde is a black raised deck that is not as big. Is it the black side or silver side i put the paste and zalmen on?

All I do is stick a bunch in the middle of the CPU heatspreader (the silver looking thing) and put the heatsink on and secure it, it spreads itself out.
