How to change my broadband modem?

About a month ago I cancelled my broadband connection with a 'certain' company and as I had completed my 12 month contract I got to keep the 'speedtouch 330' modem. Last week I started recieving broadband again but this time with British telecom. I asked BT in advance whether I would be able to use my old 'speedtouch 330' instead of having to pay extra for a new modem and was told that the 330 would work fine as it's more than able to carry 512KB broadband.
BT sent me a new modem anyway just incase I couldn't get the 330 to work. The new modem they sent me is the 'BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router'.
Now when I inserted the software CD that BT sent me, I went through the procedure to set up the new connection but instead of using the new modem, I plugged in the 330. I thought that it would be OK because the modem was indicating that a DSL signal was being picked-up because it was displaying 2 solid green lights. However, the installation procedure informed me that it couldn't detect a modem and asked me to plug-in the 'BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router', which I did. As soon as I did so, the router was detected, the installation completed and now I am happily surfing the net.
However, I don't want to splash-out £30 on a router when I have a perfectly good modem that will do the job already. I'm not keen on using a router anyway because I've heard that they can be a pain in the ****. It isn't possible to host in certain internet games, such as rome total war, if you are behind a router, for example.
My problem is that I don't have a clue how to configure my new connection to recognise my trusty old 'speedtouch 330'.
Does anyone have an idea how this can be done?
Thanks in advance!

Reinstall the software for the speed-touch and uninstall the other software. Try that, i dunno :-)
