How to choose gaming vider card

With video cards how do I look at the numbers and pick the faster cards?GeForce has numbers like 6200,7200,8400,and 9800. Radeon has numbers like 3450 and 4870. I need to know which is fastes for games.

Thanks! I should also mention that the chart has some cards listed multiple times, this is due to if it is in Crossfire (CF) or SLI mode.
 
There are a few Nvidia cards that aren't listed there and they should be on the top of the chart somewhere in the top 3 of the non SLi sections...

GTX 285

and GTX 295.
 
Well the list sucks because some of the cards on there do not make sense in their order. It's an ok (sort of) reference but do not take the chart as the final word. It's seems heavily biased towards Nvidia cards. The 4870x2 should be at the top of the list (in the chart a 9800gtx is better?????) Sorry I just had to say that, it just makes me upset that these sites do this. People trust them to be unbiased so they can be informed correctly when they make their purchase.

you fail.


That chart is all the points added from all the softwares they tested. What this really means is, ATi built a great card, but their drivers suck. Resulting in a catastrophic failure against the Nvidia cards.

No it's a known fact tom's is biased and do not use updated drivers for the test's. You really believe the 9800gtx is better?
 
What is also worth mentioning is that you need a sufficient PSU to drive any card you choose, and depending on your resolution that you play games at, you probably don't need anything more than a 8800 in most games. Don't waste your money.

You see... the link on the previous post is from ALL the softwares they benchmarked added up together.

If you look at the individual softwares, you can see that not all Nvidia cards outperform the ATi's. It really depends on which game/software because of the coding.

Here for example, ATi's dominate, but in some other ones, it may not be the same.

2 4870's beat 2 9800gtx's. If you look at the chart a GTX280 is on the top and 2 or so down is 280's in sli. The chart is wrong but if you wanna believe it go ahead. I am done arguing on this because I know what cards are better and don't need a biased list to tell me.

If you want to be ignorant than it's fine by me. Some softwares work better with Nvidia and some work better with ATi.
